Delta Air Lines to Exile Basic Economy Passengers Without Status to Last Boarding Group
If don’t have elite status or the airline's credit cards and who buy a basic economy ticket, you will be relegated to Group 7 for boarding.
Delta Air Lines is rolling out a stricter boarding policy that will push certain travelers to the very back of the line, a move that rewards loyalty program members while penalizing budget-conscious flyers who lack elite status or co-branded credit cards.
Under the new policy, passengers who purchase basic economy tickets and do not hold Delta Medallion elite status or carry one of the airline's co-branded credit cards will be assigned to Group 7, the last boarding group. The change effectively makes the boarding experience significantly worse for travelers who choose the airline's cheapest fare class without any loyalty credentials.
Delta's decision underscores a broader industry trend of airlines using boarding privileges as an incentive to drive credit card sign-ups and loyalty program enrollment. By making the basic economy experience less comfortable, the airline appears to be nudging travelers toward spending more — either on higher fare classes or on an airline-branded credit card.
For frequent flyers and elite status holders, the change is unlikely to cause any disruption. Those travelers will continue to board in earlier groups, enjoying earlier access to overhead bin space and a smoother start to their journey. The real impact falls squarely on occasional travelers and price-sensitive passengers.
Consumer advocates have raised concerns that policies like this increasingly punish travelers simply for seeking the lowest available fare, arguing that the boarding process is becoming yet another arena where airlines stratify passengers based on spending power rather than ticket purchase alone.
Delta has not yet announced a formal implementation date for the updated boarding structure, but the policy is expected to take effect in the coming months. Travelers are advised to review their fare class and loyalty status before their next Delta flight to understand which boarding group they will be assigned.
