Shares of major health insurers jumped Friday after the federal government announced it would raise Medicare Advantage payment rates by 2.48% for 2027, a figure that exceeded its earlier proposal and offered a significant reprieve for an industry under mounting financial pressure.

UnitedHealth Group and Humana led the gains, with both stocks climbing sharply following the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announcement. Other insurers with significant Medicare Advantage exposure also posted strong advances as investors welcomed the more favorable reimbursement outlook.

The final rate increase surpassed the preliminary proposal that had been put forward earlier this year, a development that analysts said signals a more supportive regulatory posture toward the private Medicare market. The industry had lobbied aggressively for higher payments, warning that inadequate reimbursements were making it difficult to sustain the plans.

Medicare Advantage, the privately administered alternative to traditional Medicare, has grown rapidly in recent years and now covers more than half of all Medicare-eligible Americans. Insurers have faced rising medical costs and utilization rates that have squeezed margins, leading some companies to scale back plan offerings in certain markets.

The improved rate outlook may help stabilize the sector after a turbulent period marked by earnings misses and guidance cuts. Humana in particular has struggled with elevated medical costs, making Friday's announcement especially consequential for the Louisville-based insurer.

Analysts cautioned that while the rate increase is a positive development, it may not fully offset the cost pressures facing insurers. The industry will need to carefully assess whether the higher payments are sufficient to restore profitability across their Medicare Advantage portfolios as 2027 plan designs are finalized in the months ahead.
