Meta Slashes Hundreds of Jobs Across Reality Labs, Facebook, and Beyond
The layoffs come as Meta has been refocusing its efforts and pouring billions of dollars into AI.
Meta cutting several hundred jobs across Reality Labs, Facebook and other departments
Meta Platforms announced it is cutting several hundred positions across multiple divisions, including its Reality Labs unit, the Facebook app team, and other departments within the company. The layoffs represent the latest round of workforce reductions at the social media giant as it continues to reshape its organizational priorities. Affected employees were notified this week, and the company confirmed that the cuts span various roles and levels across the organization.
The job reductions come as Meta has been aggressively redirecting its resources and investment toward artificial intelligence, which CEO Mark Zuckerberg has repeatedly identified as the company's top priority. Meta has committed tens of billions of dollars to AI infrastructure, including plans to spend heavily on data centers and computing power to support its ambitious AI initiatives. The company has been building out its AI capabilities across its family of apps, including AI-powered features for Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, as well as developing its Llama large language model.
Reality Labs, the division responsible for Meta's virtual and augmented reality hardware and metaverse ambitions, has been a particularly notable target of the restructuring. The unit has posted cumulative losses exceeding $50 billion in recent years, drawing scrutiny from investors who have questioned the long-term viability of the metaverse strategy. While Meta has not abandoned its mixed reality efforts entirely, the company appears to be tightening spending in the division as it funnels more capital toward AI development and deployment.
Meta's latest cuts follow a period of dramatic workforce reshaping that began in late 2022, when the company eliminated thousands of jobs in what Zuckerberg called a "year of efficiency." Since then, the company has seen its stock price recover significantly as investors have rewarded its cost-cutting measures and AI-focused strategy. A Meta spokesperson said the company remains committed to supporting affected employees through the transition, including providing severance packages and job placement assistance. The layoffs underscore the ongoing tension in the tech industry between investing in emerging technologies and maintaining lean operations.
