Artemis 2 Toilet Works Fine, But Waste Tank Evacuation Poses New Challenge

NASA's Artemis 2 mission is shaping up to be a landmark moment in human spaceflight, but engineers are working through an unexpected hurdle — not with the spacecraft's toilet itself, but with the system responsible for emptying its waste tank.

Officials confirmed that the space toilet aboard the Orion capsule is functioning as designed and poses no threat to the mission or crew. The device, built to handle human waste in microgravity, has passed its key operational checks without issue.

The problem lies downstream. Ground teams are currently working through challenges related to evacuating — or draining — the waste storage tank, a critical process that must be completed reliably before and after crewed missions. 'The challenge that we're working through is evacuating the tank,' a NASA spokesperson said.

While the issue may sound unglamorous, waste management systems are a serious engineering concern in space travel. Failure to properly handle waste can create hygiene risks, produce harmful gases, and compromise the health and safety of astronauts on long-duration missions.

Artemis 2 is slated to carry four astronauts on a flight around the Moon — the first crewed lunar flyby since Apollo 17 in 1972. Engineers are under pressure to resolve all outstanding technical issues well ahead of the planned launch, currently targeted for 2025.

NASA has faced toilet-related challenges before. The space toilet aboard the International Space Station required a costly redesign after problems emerged with its urine-processing hardware. Officials say they are determined not to repeat such issues on the Artemis program.

Teams are actively troubleshooting the tank evacuation problem and remain confident a solution will be found in time. No changes to the launch schedule have been announced as a result of the issue.
