Jonny Kim, whose extraordinary resume includes service as a Navy SEAL, a degree in mathematics, a Harvard Medical School education, and selection as a NASA astronaut, has been announced as the featured speaker for Harvard University's Alumni Day celebration. Kim will address the university's vast global alumni community in what promises to be one of the most anticipated addresses in the event's history. Kim's path to Harvard was anything but conventional. After enlisting in the Navy at age 18, he completed the grueling Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training and went on to serve as a combat medic, sniper, navigator, and point man during more than 100 combat operations across two deployments to the Middle East. He earned a Silver Star and a Bronze Star with Combat V for his valor in combat. After leaving active duty, he pursued his education with the same intensity, earning a degree in mathematics from the University of San Diego before enrolling at Harvard Medical School, where he graduated with his Doctor of Medicine degree.
Even after achieving what most would consider multiple lifetimes' worth of accomplishments, Kim pressed further. In 2017, he was selected by NASA as part of Astronaut Group 22, beating out more than 18,000 applicants for one of just 12 spots. He completed his astronaut training in 2020 and has been assigned to future missions, including potential deep-space exploration aboard the Artemis program. His selection placed him among an elite group preparing to push the boundaries of human space travel and scientific discovery.
