Chiefs Veteran Omenihu Says NFL Has Cracked Lamar's Code But Not Josh Allen's

Defensive end Charles Omenihu signed with the Commanders as a free agent this offseason, but he spent the last three seasons with the Chiefs and that gave him experience in trying to stop two of the league's top quarterbacks.

Defensive end Charles Omenihu may be suiting up for the Washington Commanders this season, but his three years with the Kansas City Chiefs gave him a front-row seat to studying two of the most dynamic quarterbacks in the NFL — and he has a bold take on how the league views each of them.

Omenihu, who signed with Washington as a free agent this offseason, believes the NFL has largely figured out Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, while Buffalo Bills signal-caller Josh Allen remains an unsolvable puzzle for opposing defenses.

'The league has figured out Lamar Jackson,' Omenihu said, drawing a sharp distinction between the two MVP-caliber players. 'They haven't figured out Josh Allen.' The comment is sure to spark debate given that Jackson has won two NFL MVP awards and continues to be one of the most electrifying players in the game.

Omenihu's perspective carries weight given his experience going up against both quarterbacks during the Chiefs' deep postseason runs. Kansas City has faced Allen and the Bills in multiple high-stakes playoff matchups, and the Chiefs have also had to gameplan against Jackson and Baltimore in recent AFC clashes.

The defensive end's assessment of Allen is particularly telling. Despite years of film study and evolving defensive schemes, Allen's combination of elite arm talent, jaw-dropping athleticism, and improvisational ability appears to still leave coordinators scrambling for answers on a weekly basis.

As for Jackson, Omenihu's claim doesn't diminish the Ravens quarterback's brilliance, but rather suggests that defensive coordinators have developed more consistent frameworks for slowing him down — even if stopping him entirely remains a tall order.

Now with the Commanders, Omenihu will look to apply those hard-earned lessons against NFC competition, bringing championship pedigree and invaluable experience to a Washington defense eager to take a step forward in 2024.
